April NYC Workshop Info

Spring Workshop Weekend
with Orrin Star at THE PARKSIDE LOUNGE
April 19-20th, 2008

4/18 update : Sunday's mandolin rounds workshop has been cancelled; the other two workshops are running as scheduled.

• Saturday April 19
BLUEGRASS RHYTHM GUITAR 2:30-4:30pm
Bluegrass guitarists have developed some of the most potent and interesting rhythm moves ever heard—but they are seldom taught in an organized way. This workshop takes a hands-on, detailed and entertaining look at them. Learn the cool bass runs and strums and how to apply them. If you strum folk, bluegrass or country music
on an acoustic guitar this workshop is for you.
3/08 update: I have tweaked this workshop, with the addition of some new material on chord forms as well a slightly different order of presenting things;
if you were thinking of taking it again it will be somewhat different.

Also Saturday:
Orrin's trio performs at the Parkside at 7:30pm

• Sunday April 20
MANDO WORKSHOP DAY
2:30-4:30pm - 'Making Your Mando Sing'
One of the hurdles facing mandolinists on the road from memori-
zing solos to making music is learning how to incorporate rhythm moves into their leads. Using the classic song "New River Train", this workshop will introduce you to a tool-kit of strums and double-stops that can be used to transform a simply vocal melody into a full-sounding mandolin solo. It also introduces some essential middle- and end-of-phrase licks.

5:00-7:00pm - Rounds on the Mandolin:
A Music-Making Workshop
Rounds—those infectious melodies that magically harmonize when sung at staggered intervals—sound great on the mandolin. And because of their simplicity, they can be learned and played almost immediately—so most of this workshop will be devoted to actually making music! So join us for an afternoon of harmonic convergence as we explore six rounds of varying degrees of complexity.
(In addition to tablature, those in this workshop will also receive a music-minus-one CD of all the rounds covered.)
