LEAD FLATPICKING: Beyond the Basics
7:30-9:45pm
plus jamming to 10:30pm
You’ve got the books and tabs, play some fiddle tunes, are starting
to feel at home playing leads—now what? This workshop zeros-in
on the subtleties: incorporating strums and other rhythm into your solos; using rest strokes and double-stops; and thinking like a fiddler.
SUGAR LAND LOCATION

Saturday Jan 17
BLUEGRASS RHYTHM GUITAR 2:30-4:45pm
preceded by a jam at 1:30pm
Bluegrass guitarists have developed some of the most potent and interesting rhythm moves ever heard—but they are seldom taught in an organized way. This workshop takes a hands-on, detailed and entertaining look at them. Learn the cool bass runs and strums and how to apply them. If you strum folk, bluegrass or country music
on an acoustic guitar this workshop is for you.
SUGAR LAND LOCATION

BAY AREA BG ASSOCIATION CONCERT at 7:00pm.

Sunday Jan 18
MANDOLIN WORKSHOP DAY
[SUGAR LAND]
CRACKING THE CODE: Visualizing the Neck Through
Double-Stops Noon-2:00pm
Implicit in the tuning of the mandolin is a 'map' of the fretboard that mandolinists rely on to play in any key. Using two string mini-chords (double-stops) and the tune Silent Night, this workshop will jump-start your understanding of this map (and also explore the technique of tremolo).

2:00-3:30pm Free Mando Tasting & Jam Party
Open to anyone attending either workshop.

MAKING YOUR MANDO SING: A Guide to Bluegrass Soloing 3:30-5:30pm
One of the hurdles facing mandolinists on the road from memorizing solos to making music is learning to incorporate rhythm moves into their leads. Using the classic song New River Train, this workshop will give you a tool-kit of strums and double-stops that can be used to transform a simple vocal melody into a full-sounding mandolin solo.
